Does schema markup help you get cited by AI? What actually works

Schema markup (structured data) helps you get cited by AI in one specific way: it states your facts in a format machines read without guessing. It won't manufacture authority or vault you up the rankings, but it removes ambiguity — and ambiguity is a common reason businesses get left out of AI answers.

What schema actually does

Schema is a small block of code that labels your information: "this is the business name", "this is the phone number", "this is a review", "this is the answer to this question". Instead of inferring your details from page text, an engine can read them directly and confidently.

The types worth adding for a local business

  • LocalBusiness — your name, address, phone, hours, service area and categories. The foundation.
  • FAQPage — question-and-answer pairs. This is especially useful for GEO, because AI engines lift direct answers.
  • Service or Product — the specific things you offer.
  • BreadcrumbList — helps engines understand your site structure.

What schema will not do

  • It won't make false claims true. Marking up a "5-star rating" you don't have is a violation and can get you penalized.
  • It won't outrank genuinely better, more trusted competitors on its own.
  • It won't fix inconsistent details elsewhere. Schema should match your Google profile and the rest of the web.

The one rule that keeps you safe

Only mark up facts that are actually visible on the page and true. Honest structured data helps AI cite you accurately; dishonest structured data is a fast way to lose trust with both Google and AI engines.

How this fits the bigger picture

Schema is the "make my facts unmistakable" layer. On its own it's modest; combined with clear content, a complete Google profile, consistent details and real reviews, it meaningfully improves your odds of being cited correctly. TheNearHub includes a schema kit so your pages carry accurate LocalBusiness and FAQ markup without hand-coding it.
