SEO vs GEO: what's the difference and which matters in 2026

SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking in the list of blue links. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being named inside the AI-generated answer that increasingly sits above those links. They're different goals, but the work overlaps heavily, and in 2026 a local business needs both.

The core difference

  • SEO asks: when someone searches, does my page appear high in the results? The unit of success is a ranked link.
  • GEO asks: when an AI (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) answers a question, does it mention and cite my business? The unit of success is a citation inside the answer.

A customer searching "emergency electrician near me" might never scroll to the links if the AI answer at the top already names three electricians. If you're not one of them, strong traditional rankings alone won't save you.

Where they overlap

Most of what earns an AI citation is good SEO: clear content, accurate business details, structured data, reviews, and third-party mentions. AI engines were trained on the web and still lean on trusted sources. So you rarely trade one for the other.

Where GEO is different

  • Answer-first writing. AI lifts direct answers, so leading with the answer matters more for GEO than for classic SEO.
  • Clarity over keyword coverage. Stuffing variants can help thin SEO plays but hurts GEO, which favors clean, quotable statements.
  • Consistency across sources. AI cross-checks. If your details disagree between your site and your Google profile, it hesitates to cite you.

What this means for a local business

Don't pick one. Do the local-SEO fundamentals — profile, reviews, consistent details, useful pages — and layer GEO habits on top: answer questions directly, add FAQs, keep facts consistent, and track where you actually show up in AI answers. That last part is new, and it's the thing most businesses have no visibility into.

The bottom line

SEO is still essential; GEO is the new surface area on top of it. The businesses that win in 2026 treat "do I show up in the AI answer?" as a question worth measuring, not guessing.
