Why your business doesn't show up in ChatGPT (and how to fix it)
If you ask ChatGPT for a recommendation in your field and your business never comes up, it's almost always one of a handful of fixable reasons. Here they are, with the fix for each.
1. Your details are inconsistent across the web
If your name, address or phone number differ between your website, Google Business Profile, and directories, AI can't be confident it's talking about one real business — so it stays quiet. Fix: pick one exact version of your details and make every listing match it.
2. Your website doesn't clearly say what you do or where
Slogan-heavy sites with little plain text give AI nothing to quote. Fix: write a clear page per service that names the service and your service area in normal language.
3. You have no third-party footprint
If no reputable source mentions you — directories, local press, trade associations, reviews — AI has no outside signal that you're real and trusted. Fix: claim your profiles, get listed in legitimate local and trade directories, and encourage genuine reviews.
4. Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unclaimed
This is one of the most-referenced local sources. A thin or missing profile is a big gap. Fix: claim it, complete every field, pick accurate categories, and keep it current.
5. Your pages are thin or look mass-produced
Dozens of near-identical "service + city" pages are a spam pattern that search and AI engines discount. Fix: fewer, genuinely useful pages with real information beat a pile of templated ones.
6. You're simply new or low-authority
Sometimes everything's fine and you just haven't accumulated enough trusted signals yet. Fix: keep the fundamentals consistent and give it months; authority compounds.
How to know which one it is
Work down this list and audit each. Then re-check by asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your customers' questions over several weeks. If you'd rather not track that by hand, TheNearHub records which questions you appear for and on which engines, so you can see whether your fixes are working.
